How to give your AI agent a personality (5 tones compared)
Most AI agents sound the same: polite, padded and a little beige. That is fine for a one-off question. It is a problem for an agent you talk to every day, because the voice decides whether you actually act on what it says. Some people move when they are pushed. Some move when they are encouraged. Some just want the number.
A personality is not a vibe you hope for. It is a set of written rules in the agent's system prompt: how it opens, how long its sentences are, how it handles bad news, and how it closes. This guide shows how Vibewright writes those rules, compares the five launch tones on the exact same question, and shows where to paste the result in Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini.
What a tone actually controls
Every Vibewright build has a header like CFO · Tax Planner · Funny and a SKU like CFO-TAX3-FUN-v1.0. The role and emphasis carry the expertise. The tone module carries the attitude, and it spells out:
- The opener. A challenge, a specific compliment, a straight answer, a joke or a wry line.
- Sentence shape. Short bursts, numbered steps, tables, or a mix.
- The sign-off. Every tone ends on one concrete next action with a deadline, phrased its own way.
- The don'ts. For example, no insults in Aggressive, no hollow "Great question!" in Affirming, no exclamation points in Dry, no jokes about the user in Funny or Sarcastic.
- Dial-down mode. When the user is stressed or the situation is serious, the attitude steps back and a calm plan takes over.
- Refusals. Tone never overrides the guardrails. If a request crosses a line, every tone starts with a plain "No."
That last pair is the difference between a personality and a gimmick. The attitude is there to get you moving, and it gets out of the way when it would hurt.
Same question, five tones
Here is one question from the Fractional CFO · Tax Planner builds, which drop on Monday, October 26, 2026. The user writes: "Just landed a $40k contract payment. First big one. What do I set aside?" Each build gives the same substance (a $12,000 tax reserve at a saved 30% rate, plus a reminder to true up the January estimate). Only the delivery changes. These lines are quoted from the builds' own examples.
| Tone | Opening line | Closing line |
| Aggressive Hard-Charger | "$40k landed. Good. Now protect it before it disappears." | "Do it now: transfer $12,000 by Friday and tell me when it's done." |
| Affirming Coach | "Big one. You asked before spending a dollar of it, and that's exactly how operators think." | "Your move: transfer $12,000 to the tax account by Friday and tell me when it's done." |
| Dry Monotone | "Set aside $12,000." | "Next action: transfer $12,000 to the tax reserve account. Due: Friday." |
| Funny Sidekick | "Congrats! Quick, before your bank account gets ideas and starts browsing gaming chairs." | "Next step (the fun part, allegedly): transfer $12,000 by Friday and tell me when it's done." |
| Sarcastic Sidekick | "Wonderful news. The IRS is also thrilled for you. They'd like their cut." | "Next step, should you choose to accept it: transfer $12,000 by Friday and tell me when it's done." |
Notice what stays fixed: the dollar amount, the deadline and the risk warning. In the Funny and Sarcastic builds the risk line is clearly labeled ("Serious bit:" and "Genuinely, no sarcasm:") so nobody mistakes it for a joke.
The five tones, side by side
Aggressive Hard-Charger
Intense, urgent, results-first. It opens with the stakes, uses imperative verbs, puts a deadline on everything and calls out drift ("You said Friday last week. It's Tuesday. What's blocking it?"). It pushes on the plan, never on the person, and it will not use pressure to push a risky or irreversible move. Pick it if you procrastinate on things that cost you money.
Affirming Coach
A strength coach in your corner. It opens with one specific, true compliment about something you actually did, then corrects the plan plainly when the plan is wrong ("Good instinct. Wrong move. Here's why."). No fake praise, and no hype that hides a risk. Pick it if you do your best work when someone recognizes the right moves out loud.
Dry Monotone
Flat, precise, Type-A. Answer in the first line, numbered steps, tables for numbers, labels like "Risk:" and "Assumption:", and no greetings, praise or exclamation points. Good news and bad news read the same. Pick it if you want a checklist, not a conversation.
Funny Sidekick
Warm and playful, usually one short joke at the top, then a clear, complete answer. It laughs with you, never at you, and it does not joke inside risk warnings or when you are upset. Pick it if the work is stressful and you would rather start it smiling. This is the tone of the free sample.
Sarcastic Sidekick
The jaded expert who has seen every mess twice and still fixes yours. One wry line per reply at most, aimed at the situation, the tools or the bureaucracy, then a straight answer. Sarcasm switches off for serious problems. Pick it if polite AI makes you roll your eyes.
How to load a personality into your AI tool
A Vibewright build is a Markdown system prompt. Load the whole file, not just the tone section, so the role, emphasis, tone and guardrails stay together. In Claude and Gemini you paste it into the instructions; ChatGPT needs a two-part setup, below. Steps below match each vendor's help pages as of October 20, 2026.
Claude (Projects)
- Go to claude.ai/projects and click + New Project.
- On the project page, click Set project instructions, paste the build and click Save instructions.
- Start new chats inside the project so the instructions apply. Our full Claude Projects setup guide covers knowledge files and memory. (Anthropic help)
ChatGPT (Projects)
- Select New project in the sidebar and give it a name.
- Upload the full build
.md file to the project's sources (files). A full build runs about 28,000 to 31,000 characters, more than ChatGPT's project instructions field holds. OpenAI doesn't publish an exact limit for that field, so don't try to paste the whole build there.
- Open the project's more options menu (•••), select Project settings, and paste a short loader line plus four core sections from the build (Absolute refusals, 1. Identity, 5. Communication style, 12. Guardrails) into the instructions. The loader tells ChatGPT to follow the uploaded file. Our ChatGPT Projects setup guide has the loader text and step-by-step details.
- Project instructions apply only inside that project and override your global custom instructions. (OpenAI help)
A note on Custom GPTs: OpenAI's help center now says new GPT creation is not available on personal ChatGPT accounts (Free, Go, Plus and Pro), and that it plans to retire custom GPTs in favor of plugins. Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces can still create GPTs where settings allow, and the build goes in the Instructions field. (OpenAI help)
Gemini (Gems)
- Go to gemini.google.com, open the sidebar and click Gems.
- Click New Gem, enter a name, paste the build into the instructions and click Save.
- Google says that starting in November 2026, Gems on personal Google accounts will transition automatically to skills, so check the current flow if the button names change. (Google help)
Test it in two messages
- Ask a real question from your week and check that the opener and sign-off match the tone.
- Then say something stressful ("I just got a scary letter from the IRS"). A well-built tone should drop the attitude and give you a calm plan first.
If the tone drifts, look for conflicting account-wide instructions in your tool's settings before you edit the build.
